The New Republic Is A Joke
Posted by TF Boggs at 7:20 PM, 7/19/07
Much talk has been made recently about the write up in The New Republic from a supposed soldier who tells some outlandish stories about his time in Iraq (you can find a good write up about the story here ). I cannot offer much more than has already been said about the “soldier” author in question as I was never at FOB Falcon but what I can do is share some stories about some questionable soldiers that I have had the pleasure to be around.

For starters I believe the entire New Republic story to be a fake, no soldier would ever be able to get away with the things that the author says he did. Not even taking into consideration that most of what he said is basically impossible i.e. running over dogs in a Bradley (a Bradley cannot maneuver quick enough to run over a moving dog), a soldier wearing a human skull on his head (how exactly does a human skull fit like a hat?), and making fun of a woman scarred by an IED (a soldier who said something like that would get his ass kicked by anyone in the vicinity, including me).

With that out of the way I do know some soldiers who are far from the label of “the best and the brightest”. On my first deployment I was in a unit with a kid who believed that he could curse other people. If he put a curse on you it was as good as gold to him that whatever he said about you would come to pass. Needless to say this kid provided enough material for us to laugh about daily, but in reality I could see him making up a crazy story like the one the soldier did in TNR just to get attention.

On my second deployment I was in a unit with a kid who was a Wiccan and we had to keep taking away his sacrificial knives that he had for his “altar” in his room. Although this kid needed constant watching he wasn’t that bad of a guy, and most of us liked him, and got along with him. However, I could see him making up stories to get attention as well.

I was also with soldiers who told their family members back home that they were going on secret missions with generals, and were single handedly killing al Qaeda on a daily basis.

These types of soldiers are few and far between, but they do exist and they give all soldiers a bad name. I share this information just to make the point that there are bad seeds in the military who act on their own, and sometimes unbeknownst to their higher ups. We try to keep as tight a rein on them as we can but we cannot be everywhere at once.

If the “soldier” who “told” TNR these stories is real, his stories are not. Sure there have been some unfortunate occurrences in Iraq but nothing like what the author of the article talks about. A story like this one will only do harm to the reputation of American soldiers abroad, and could quite possibly cause physical harm to them as well.

The New Republic should be ashamed that they were suckered into publishing this story. They should be ashamed because they seemed to have been a respectable publication in the past, but they will no longer be thought of as so. That their fact checkers and editors let this one slip by speaks very poorly of them. Their unprofessional decision to go ahead with this story speaks ill of the vast majority of American soldiers who sacrifice so much to bring much needed change to the world. TNR owes an apology to all American fighting men and women for their hurtful story. If you have a subscription to TNR cancel it today and send them a message.

I think it is so incredibly irresponsible of editors and or fact checkers to let articles like this be published. What were they thinking?

Oh wait...they weren`t.

Really enjoying the new site t.f., great job.

I have to agree, TF. This one smells about as real as the "flushing the Koran down the toilet" story.

The example folks that you cited sound like those who would add fuel to conspiracy theories and alien abductions just to get attention and make themselves important. Are there really that many still in the all volunteer military?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Okay, accidentally hit the "enter button" to add to what I said above... as a former Sgt. I can`t possibly see how all of that would go on without an NCO or an officer squashing it immediately. The problem was that the writer at TNR WANTED to believe these stories. We all ran into story tellers at some point in the military, The TNR writer couldn`t fathom that everybody with military experience would smell the B.S. from a mile away. Shows what can happen when you write on a subject with which you have no understanding.....

What does it matter if the stories are true or not? I read those stories and was just sad. Maybe those things happened, maybe they didn`t, maybe you knew guys who did that kind of stuff, maybe you didn`t. Regardless of whether his stories are factual S.T.`s stories are supposed to remind you that things are messed up over there and that it can quite easily have an effect on the perfectly normal people participating. His stories aren`t pro-war or anti-war, they`re just statements about the war.

Are you freaking kidding me? Did you really just ask "What does it matter if the stories are true or not?"? His stories weren`t intended to remind people of anything other than what he wrote. If that was the case there would have been a disclaimer that said just that with the label fiction on it. The truth matters because we don`t live in a make believe world. I am sure you don`t care whether Bush told the truth about the reasons we went to Iraq do you? As long as he did to remind everyone that it was a bad situation and that "things are messed up over there".

What if I wrote a story about killing someone in your family, not that I ever did that but just so that people know people get killed every day. That would be pretty cool wouldn`t it? I am sure you wouldn`t mind as I described it in detail would you?

Let me ask you something real quick. Why are you so upset about these stories? Are you going to try and tell me that nothing remotely like that ever happens over there? That all soldiers are perfectly upstanding young men and never make bad jokes or do something offensive. Forgive me if I`m not buying that.

Fuck. Sorry about that one. Ignore it. I wasn`t ready to submit that. Why are you so upset about the stories? They were well written and I think Scott has a knack for showing the messed up side to a messed up situation. It doesn`t bother me that maybe the stories didn`t happen to him or people he knows. I`m sure there are things like that happening over there. If you want to tell me that nothing like that is happening, then we can talk about that, and I`ll listen to what you have to say, but I`m going to be a little apprehensive. To answer your question, I do care whether Bush lied or not about the reasons for going over there, but I don`t think this is the same situation. If Scott lied or exaggerated or whatever about his stories, then what? Are people`s lives at stake because of his stories? Cause they are with Bush`s story. About your other question: I don`t think it would be cool, and I would find it particularly disturbing if you described killing my family, but that would be the point, wouldn`t it. Isn`t that why you brought it up. If you were going to write a story there would be a purpose. With that story the purpose would be to fuck me up a little bit. I don`t know what it`s like to be a soldier over there. Maybe you don`t need reminding about how fucked it is over there, but I have no idea...until I started reading these stories. True or not, they give me an idea of what being in a constant life or death situation will do to someone. Again I ask, what exactly is your beef with these stories?

I was thinking about what I just wrote and I wanted to add one more thing. An apology. I think it`d pretty rude if someone came to my home and started arguing with me about something, and I think the same applies to a blog. I`m not trying to start an argument and I do not wish to offend. I hope we can discuss this civilly, without it turning into a dick measuring contest.

The reason the stories matter to me is because I know they aren`t true. They mirror nothing I have ever heard, or anyone I know who has been to Iraq has ever heard. They are simply false. The truth matters to me unlike you. I mean seriously Knows the Guy, the truth doesn`t matter to you? I really don`t think we can have a conversation if you don`t care about the truth.

Stories like the ones TNR printed do not happen in Iraq, sure there have been some bad things but not like the ones he said (except for the dog killing one, just not with Bradleys). I also don`t see why you automatically assume the worst about the soldiers and are apprehensive about anyone saying something different. Apparently you already have your mind made up about soldiers in Iraq and no amount of truth will help you change your mind since you don`t care about pesky things like that. Conversation over.

It`s not that I don`t think the truth matters. You assume that I see the worst in these soldiers. I don`t. I wish the best for every single one of them, I hope they all come home safe. I don`t read that story and see soldiers being bad. I read that story and see young men being torn apart, mentally, by what they have to go through on a daily basis. This is what I don`t doubt is happening. I don`t blame anyone for this. I see it as a cost of war and sad at is, unavoidable. Maybe kids aren`t driving over dogs in Bradleys, maybe it`s just a regular jeep. Big deal. Maybe the kid found the grave site and instead of wearing the skull he made some terribly insensitive joke. It`s still a completely fucked situation. I`m not attributing the actions of a few soldiers on the masses. I`m not even apprehensive that these stories are false. I`m saying that even though I don`t know what exactly is going on over there, I`m sure that soldiers are being torn apart by the things they`ve seen and experienced. I just want to clarify, and I`m sorry if my line of thought is upsetting, but the truth does matter to me. I care about whether the stories are true or not, but because I`m sure that war fucks some people up (how can it not) I`m apprehensive that these types of things aren`t happening at all. These stories are tragic, true or not, and Scott is just trying to convey that tragedy to those who don`t know it firsthand. Hard as it is to believe, I am trying to understand your side of things. Maybe it`s because I, personally, am not seeing this as an affront to the soldiers overseas, that I`m having a hard time seeing what the deal is. I don`t know. Like I said before, I do not mean to offend or start an argument, I hope you can see that, I would just like to convey my thoughts on the topic. I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me. I`m not some dickhead who has already made up his mind. I really do want to know what you have to say and greatly respect your opinion and the views you hold.

"If Scott lied or exaggerated or whatever about his stories, then what? Are people`s lives at stake because of his stories?" Yes. All of the Iraqis who believed us when we said we would stay and make it right, who worked with us to find the bad guys, who helped us make their country a better place--they`re all screwed when we pull out of Iraq prematurely because of a lack of public faith caused in part by such "fake but accurate" stories as Pvt. Scott Thomas Beauchamp. Take a good look at pictures of the kids and civilians over there and tell me that their lives aren`t at stake in this debate, or that it doesn`t really matter whether such things really happened or not. Public opinion and public policy is made on such things--on such lies.
